100 Rupee Haircut Part 2
I cross the street and the smell of something frying in the restaurant across the street makes my
stomach grumble. I haven’t eaten since yesterday morning, I remember. I walk up to the
restaurant and see a kid about the same age as me sit next to his mother, his nose in a smart
phone munching on his food. His mother looks my way and glances at the leftover food on their
plates. She calls for the waiter and points to me. The waiter picks up their plates and goes to the
back. A few minutes later he comes and hands over a plastic bag with a malu pang and two
rolls.Today seemed like good day.
“Take this and get out of here kollo”.
I take the food and leave gobbling down the food.
The sun was starting to set so I headed over to the saloon to get my lice filled hair cut. Tonight I
can sleep in peace I think as I finish up to the lasts of the rolls.
I run to the first saloon I see and go and sit in the queue.
“What are you doing here! Get out! Get out!” The owner sees me.
“Brother, I’m here to get my hair cut” I reply
“What are you crazy?! We don’t work here for charity!”
“But I have money” I pulled out my 100 rupee note.
“Ahaha 100 rupees. You are crazy boy. A haircut is 200 rupees now!” he laughs.
My heart sinks as my ears start to heat up. I get up and leave the place.
A lot has changed in a year.
